Locomotives

Mining Equipment is proudly building a complete line of diesel locomotives. We have been rebuilding every make of locomotive available over the last 30 years, and so have seen examples of the good, the bad and the impractical when it comes to locomotive design. Using that hard earned knowledge and experience along with a great deal of customer input we decided to build a simpler, more robust locomotive, We know what customers want and need.

Planetary drives and wet disc brakes highlight our 15-35 ton class locomotives. Making them extremely low maintenance, thus saving you time and money on labor and parts. We also build locomotives in the smaller 4-12 ton range. These models feature a hydrostatic drive and heavy duty gear boxes.

Our Philosophy

Throughout the design process our goals have been: Keep it simple; Make it strong; Minimize maintenance.

The “heart” of this philosophy is centered around our custom designed rigid bevel gear axle with planetary reduction wheel hubs (final torque reduction at wheel), featuring integral hydraulic applied wet disk brakes and spring applied parking/emergency brakes.

Durable Features

Most of our new locomotives feature a hydrodynamic three speed transmission with lock-up torque converter and engine exhaust brake and integrated wet disk brakes. These items combined together provide wear free braking.

Our 25 ton can be used in underground or surface mining, in tunneling or construction projects. The 25 ton can be built with various engines and drive components, all of which effect speed, power and tractive effort. Haulage capacity is contingent on locomotive weight, horsepower and adhesion factors such as track conditions. A Mining Equipment representative can assist you in determining the combination that is best suited to your particular application.

Longevity

We use as standard Cummins Diesel power packs – these units have industry leading global warranty and service packages (other brands such as Deutz and CAT can be provided as options).

Gauge
Planning for the future we want our locomotives to move from project to project with you – and so we designed a gauge changing system that is the simplest in the industry. It allows the gauge to be changed in a standard site workshop no need for specialist equipment.

Quality Control
Our new locomotives are manufactured at our facility in Farmington, NM. We have a robust quality policy in place at all our fabrication facilities.

Construction Information

Hydrodynamic three-speed transmission has a mechanical control lever for forward, neutral, and reverse. A second mechanical control lever is provided for the four speed ranges in each direction. Operation is simple and easy to learn. Even relatively unskilled personnel can master the operation in a very short time. Increased productivity results from increased reliability, performance and operator’s satisfaction. Major maintenance problems are eliminated. Primary service braking is inherent in the engine braking ability thus eliminating wheel and brake wear caused by ordinary shoe brake applications. Long service life is assured by the rugged design.

Rigid bevel gear axles with planetary reduction wheel hubs. Featuring integral hydraulic applied wet disk brakes and spring applied parking/emergency brakes. Wheel gauge is changed simply by bolting in the gauge adapter.

Eight rubberized cushioning pads four at each axle, are designed to compensate for uneven track and provide a smooth ride.

Wheels are made of cast steel then heat treated. The wheel profile is machined to a 1:20 taper.

Single lever control, hydraulic wet disk brakes are integral into each drive axle for secondary service braking. An axle/brake cooling circuit is installed to insure extended braking service. A spring applied wet disk brake is provided for parking and emergency situations

Air brake controls are provided for train car brakes (20 cfm air compressor). The Frame is ladder type construction using A36 steel. The plates are CNC cut to ensure precision and consistency.
